I had placed the ashes of my former partner in a memorial bench here in Indianapolis. However, nine years later I decided I should move much closer to family in Kansas City as I am getting older. Consequently, I wanted to retrieve those ashes to take with me. My partner and I had been together for 32 years, but since this was at a time when same-sex marriage was not yet legal, I was told by the Indiana Dept. of Health I did not have the right to have those ashes back as I was viewed as not being his next of kin.
