I never thought I would need to hire a lawyer. I never imagined I would have a warrant out for my arrest. Never in my wildest dreams could I ever have thought up a scenario where someone would lie to the police, accusing me of a crime when there was zero basis to the claims. All three of thes e happened to me on the same night. I had led a law-abiding life, never needed a lawyer or had very little understanding of our legal system. A women attacked me, and my credibility maliciously, with lies that were no way close to the truth and told the Seattle PD that I had sexually assaulted her. A warrant had been issued for my arrest, and I had no idea her claims had been made almost a year prior. I contacted a lifelong friend who was an attorney and asked for help. He isn’t involved in criminal law at all, and told me to hold on, and let him do a little research for me. About an hour later he called back, and said, “Call Shira, she’s the best, you want her on your side!” I immediately went to Google and typed in Shira Stefanik and started reading. The next morning, I called Shira, and explained why I needed her. I explained what had happened, and I explained the lies that I was being accused of. Shira listened for a solid hour, just taking notes. After I was done talking, she started asking me questions, wanting to know more about certain aspects, trying to learn more about me as a person. I felt like we were a team from the get-go, she was caring, yet firm. She explained the law, she explained the legal system in Washington and most importantly, she told me what to expect and about how long the process to show my innocence would take. In the end, Shira was right about everything. Going through something like this is traumatic, scary and maddening; but Shira was always there to talk and listen. I can’t thank her enough for supporting me, putting the work to show my innocence. Her connections with local judges, city attorneys, and fellow lawyers were helpful. It was very clear to me, that Shira is very well respected by her peers. When it came to advocating for me and what was right, Shira was fierce and aggressive. Her style was something I could identify with. She wanted to prove the truth, as badly I as I wanted to show my innocence. When the city attorneys determined that there were too many lies to pursue charges against me, resulting in them dropping the case, I told Shira that I couldn’t have done it without her, and her support and friendship meant so much. Shira is fierce, she is a winner, and you want her on your side!
